Free Apps Roundup for May 11th, 2012

This week on the Free Apps Roundup: If you like games, you’re going to have a good time this week, because I found a lot of great games to download free of charge. Included amongst those is Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum, which is likely to be the first first person shooter you ever played. But there are just a plethora of great games below and I don’t want to delay you any longer.

The Top Three:

  • Death Rally – This game has it all: cars, weapons and global multiplayer. Heck, you can even get into a death match against Duke Nukem. Death Rally is an action packed combat racer that has some pretty sweet top down graphics. You can upgrade your cars and guns in career mode or take it online to punish real people you don’t know. But download it now, because it’s not free forever.
  • Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum – You are OSA Super agent BJ Blazkowicz. Your mission is to escape from Nazi infested Castle Wolfenstein. This game includes all six original episodes across 60 levels with all the original weapons. It’s all here, even the incredibly dated graphics. But that doesn’t matter, this is a classic.
  • Punch Hero – Don’t be fooled by the title, this is not a rhythmic punching game, though that might be pretty awesome too. This game will challenge you to swing your 3D fists at a plethora of opponents. But what really makes this game awesome is the customizable faces. That’s right, not only can you put your own face on your boxer, you can put someone else’s face on your opponent. I’m not even going to make suggestions…

iOS hacker Pod2g shows untethered jailbreak running on the new iPad

Posted in iphone, news on May 12th, 2012 by brent – Be the first to comment

Appletell recently reported that iOS hacker pod2g successfully installed an untethered jailbreak on his iPhone 4 iOS device. Now, pod2g has announced on Twitter that he hacked a third-gen iPad to run an untethered jailbreak version of iOS 5.1. A tethered jailbreak requires the iOS device to be connected to the computer when the device needs a reboot (to run the jailbreak code), while an untethered jailbreak means the device doesn’t have to be connected to any computer when the device is rebooted.

pod2g posted the video below on YouTube showing his exploit. The video runs for about two minutes, showing more details of the latest third-gen iPad running this new untethered jailbreak.

The iOS hacker stated that more work has to be done to make his jailbreak stable for public distribution, but he said his exploits will work on all iOS devices, including the iPhone 4S.

Lost Winds 2: Winter of the Melodias

Lost Winds 2: Winter of the Melodias may be the most spot-on example of the word “enchanting” I’ve ever encountered.

If you’re not familiar with the Lost Winds games, you don’t own a Wii. Lost Winds and Lost Winds 2: Winter of the Melodias will likely stand as two of the best WiiWare games made for the system. Lost Winds eventually found its way to the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and now Frontier Developments has announced the availability of its sequel.

Lost Winds 2: Winter of the Melodias

Lost Winds 2: Winter of the Melodias allows the player to switch seasons back and forth between winter and summer at will, and use all Enril the Wind Spirit’s new elemental powers—plus those from the first game—to successfully guide and protect the young boy Toku. Evil Balasar has sent a poisonous, powerful adversary and a host of new minions to thwart your ongoing battle to lift his curse and save the enchanting world of Mistralis.

  • Harness the brilliance of nature: Sonte, Spirit of Seasons’ astonishing powers let you instantly transform Mistralis between Summer and Winter at will to aid your progress.
  • Frozen Winter ponds and waterfalls become teeming Summer pools in which Toku can dive and unlock secrets.
  • Form snowballs from the air or manipulate moisture-laden clouds to help with your quest.
  • Master Enril’s rediscovered incredible cyclone power, using it to transport Toku, smash powerful enemies and even drill through the rock around you.
  • Expansive new regions of Mistralis provide spectacular arenas for Toku’s jumps and glides.
  • New enemies and familiar foes to buffet, smash, freeze, burn and douse.
  • New characters to befriend and puzzles to solve on your adventure to reveal the secret of the Melodias’ disappearance.
  • Includes Game Center integration and Achievements.
  • The Snapshot feature lets you add game characters to your own photos and share with friends.

Lost Winds 2 was a gorgeous game on the Wii, but has been given even extra depth and added beauty by advanced graphical techniques that realize the full potential of more recent Apple devices…especially the new iPad.

Lost Winds 2: Winter of the Melodias App is available now for $3.99. An Appletell review will be posted soon.
