Cook's Illustrated

Games, games, cooking, and more games. Seriously, this week was full of great, free games. Pocket Frogs is said to be one of the more addictive games in recent history. So, if you don’t want to lose your weekend to it, steer clear. Then again, it’s really hard to say no to a free game, am I right? Plus, I found a handful of other great stuff, including…

  • Cook’s Illustrated - 50 of the best recipes developed in America’s Test Kitchen.  Plus, it has tons of media to help you be a better cook.  It also gives you multiple cooking timers, a shopping list, and I’m sure tons more.  If you’re a foodie, you’ll want to download this app for sure.
  • Pocket Frogs - This game has over 10,000 unique frogs for you to collect, trade and breed.  Nearly everyone who has played it can’t stop.  It’s universal, so if you’re looking to kill some time over the weekend, this is likely you’re best bet on any iOS device.
  • FlickrStackr Explore - Just can’t get enough Flickr?  That’s just fine, and this app will help feed the addiction.  This version is limited to letting you browse their daily pick of 500 photos and the first 50 in your search per day.  If that’s not enough and you like the app, you can buy your way to freedom.
  • GT Racing: Motor Academy HD Free - Try your hand at racing on an iPad with GT Racing.  I won’t say it looks nicer than Real Racing HD, but it looks like another fun racing game for sure.
  • VirtualGuitar - A programmable electronic guitar.  Instead of playing individual notes, this app allows you to play full chords at each fret and arrange them in order so the app will play them every time you shake it.  Could be fun.
  • Battle Bears -1 Free - The original Battle Bears has to be one of the most ridiculous shoooters available on the App Store.  You, a bear, are tasked with killing hundreds, if not thousands, of deranged and colorful bears that just want to hug you to death.  This free game puts you in a room full of them and lets you take them out before they get you.  Have fun!
  • Coin Push Frenzy - In an arcade, this type of game can be infuriating. On an iDevice, probably less so.  The idea is that you drop coins to push other coins on which sit prizes.  Drop enough coins in the right place and you’ll get the prize to drop.  I imagine this type of game will be much more fun when you don’t have to keep putting real money in…though, through in app purchases, you still can.
  • Znip Ball Lite - Similar to air hockey, this game makes great use of multitouch on your iPad.  Two of your fingers control two pieces that have a band between them.  It’s with this band that you block and reflect the ball on a table very much like air hockey.  It’s the controls that make it different really.  This version is single player only, but that’s probably not a problem.
  • PogoPlugHD - If you have a PogoPlug, then you should probably download this app.  It gives you access to your files being shared from your PogoPlug on your iPad.  That is all.
  • Battle Bears: Zombies! - While you’re at it with the Battle Bears -1, you might as well grab this one, too.  It’s free for today only.  If you like shooter games, you’ll enjoy this.

iPhone Appidemic: HuddleHub Fantasy Football 2010

HuddleHub Fantasy Football

I enjoy the fantasy football. I mean, not as much as some; I have a friend who feeds me all my tips and roster suggestions, and I sort of just glide along (I’m the kind of guy who’d rather lose than draft a Cowboy). Trouble is, I sometimes get his tips late on game day morning when I won’t be back at a computer before kickoff. The iPhone is good for web browsing, but the ESPN and Yahoo! fantasy football sites where I have teams aren’t conducive to making roster changes. Is the free HuddleHub Fantasy Football 2010 a better option?

What is it?

HuddleHub Fantasy Football 2010 allows you to manage multiple teams in the ESPN and Yahoo! leagues…no CBS Sports or NFL.com, and such. Through one attractive (but unintuitive) interface, you can add/drop players and get live scoring for your gameday matchups.

How does it work?

Sign in with your ESPN and/or Yahoo! league user name and password, and HuddleHub automatically grabs your team info. It’s quite simple, but slow, and the lack of any feedback may lead you to believe the app’s not working. In fact, the UI is a problem throughout the first time you use it, as it’s not always clear what you’re supposed to tap in order to get the info you want.

HuddleHub Fantasy Football 2010

Once your teams are imported, you can see some basic stats and match-up info…sometimes. I often get a lot of N/As for my player info, but quitting and restarting the app would usually fix that. I also find it strange that you can add/drop players, but you can’t bench/start your current players. Whether this is a design or development issue, I can’t say, as I quit trying to figure out how to bench a player for fear I’d accidentally drop him. The HuddleHub website says you can manage your team. Reader comments in iTunes say you cannot. Perhaps HuddleHub just has a different definition of “manage.”

HuddleHub Fantasy Football 2010

During the games, you can get live scoring updates. I found this to be sketchy in week one. Scores were slow to update or just wouldn’t appear during the early games, but the feature worked a bit better during the late games when I’m guessing that fewer people were accessing the server.

Is it contagious?

Not really. If you’re so deeply invested in fantasy football that you need to manage your team and track scores when away from your computer, I recommend you go ahead and pay for a better app. HuddleHub Fantasy Football 2010 would be fine as a free option for the occasional roster adjustment if you actually could make roster adjustments. The functionality here is just too limited, and the features it does include just often don’t work.

The ads work just fine, though. Imagine that.
